Arrogance, complacency, an overreliance on complicated plans, and overlooking the emotional impact of their own veterans leads to disaster for both the Earth Federation and the Delasz Fleet. While it is often referred to as 'Top Gun of Gundam' for its slick presentation, rockin' soundtrack, and test pilot cum war hero motif, there's definitely depth here. There's a lot to be said for what's presented here. As a result the Titans rise to subjugate Earth and the colonies, reacting with draconian measures to prevent this weakness from being taking advantage of, and setting the stage for civil war in MSG Zeta. With over a third of the Federation fleet destroyed by nuclear bombardment of the Gundam GP02, friendly fire from the Solar System weapon, and in battle against the Delasz Fleet, who Cima Garahau fails to reign in, and a colony drop that decimates the crops of the breadbasket of North America, the Federation's conventional strength and self-reliance is broken by Operation Stardust. The Delasz Fleet itself is a threat to the Federation, but instead of proactively marshalling their forces, they rely on playing 4D chess with them, leaving normal forces minimal ships to chase them and disrupt their plans while the upper eschelon of forces destined to become the Titans make deals with the Cima Fleet, oversee a naval review of forces to project strength, and setup another Solar System orbital mirror weapon system to stop a colony drop.Īs Uraki and the Albion try to stop Operation Stardust, Anaval Gato manages to evade capture of both the Albion and Cima Fleet long enough to disrupt the function of the mirrior control ship, making the operation a success. From that carrot-hating loser with no game, Kou Uraki, blossomed a tale that featured Zeon Remnants and led to the birth of the Titans. It really brought home the lingering impact of the OYW, showing us the blasted ruins of Sydney, the shoal zone of Solomon, and that most troubling artifact of war, the lingering hatred in men's hearts. LinksĪnd boy, was it a wild ride! As a follow-up to the One Year War series, and a bridge to Gundam Zeta, it was pretty great.
